with 9/11?" He said, 'No'.
He said: "I guess they don't know what
to do with terrorism, but they can attack countries and they want to
look heavily. I suppose they think that if they get a country, that will
intimidate the terrorists. And, you know that old saying, which States
"If the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem must become an
iron nail."
Then I went out, I was quite confused and out of
sorts, and then we attacked Afghanistan. I was very happy and pleased,
because we should do that.
And then, about six weeks later, I
went back to the Pentagon, I met the same officer, I said to him: "Why
we did not attack the Iraq?" He said: "we have to attack before the
Iraq. Oh, Sir, it's worse than that." And then he took a paper from his
desk and said to me: "I have just these wish list get the Office of the
Secretary of Defense, and here is: we will attack 7 countries and
overthrow their Governments within 5 years."
"We will start with
the Iraq, and then we take Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, the Sudan and
the Iran, seven countries in five years."
I said: "This document

Und er sagte: "Aber eine Sache haben wir dabei gelernt: wir haben gelernt, dass wir unsere Truppen in der Region des Nahen Osten einsetzen können und die Sowjets werden uns nicht mehr stoppen."
Er sagte: "Wir haben ungefähr fünf oder zehn Jahre Zeit bekommen, um all die sowjetischen Klientel-Regime zu beseitigen: Syrien, der Iran, der Irak, - bevor die nächste große Supermacht uns herausfordert."
Und es war so wie... Ich kam damals aus der Mohave-Wüste, wo ich die US-Truppen trainiert habe, ich habe damals für eine Weile verlernt, geostrategisch zu denken.

Und das ist der Grund, warum wir im Irak scheiterten, weil der Iran uns Syrien Bescheid über diesen Plan wissen. Er versprach auf die US-Außenpolitik der "Nationenbildung" und "Friedensmissionen" zu verzichten. Und hier steht er mit seinen Irak und Afghanistan. Erstaunlich!
So, also die Wurzel des Problems liegt nicht darin, wie viele Truppen wir im Irak stationieren, glauben Sie mir das bitte! Seien Sie nicht böse auf Ihre demokratischen Kongressabgeordnete, falls Sie selbst ein Demokrat sind - weil sie die Truppen in Irak nicht reduzieren können und damit den Präsidenten frustrieren.
Es ist nicht das Problem. Und wenn Sie republikanisch sind, seien Sie nicht böse zu den Demokraten, weil sie sich wegen den vielen Truppen in Irak aufregen. Unabhängig davon, ob Sie nun ein Demokrat oder ein Republikaner sind, wenn Sie ein US-Amerikaner sind, sollten Sie um die Strategie der Vereinigten Staaten in diesem Gebiet besorgt sein. Was ist unser Ziel dort, was sind unsere Absichten dort, warum sind wir dort, warum sterben die US-Amerikaner in dieser Region? Das ist das Problem.
