TODAY: a mini demonstration in Hebron by Israeli Jewish Peace Now [1] activists against the recent expansion of the Jewish settlement in the middle of the Palestinian city of Hebron by illegal squatting into a Palestinian home, under patronage of IDF, the Israeli government and the Israeli justice system. The demonstration had to be coordinated in advance with the IDF military governor's office. Dozens of soldiers, armored vehicles were involved in protecting the demonstrators, where the only threat appeared to be from hostile, harassing Jewish settlers...
The demonstrators coordinated in advance with the IDF mlitary governor all details of the event, including a planned meeting with a Palestinian, non-violent, peace activist - Issa Amro from Youth Against Settlements شباب ضد الاستيطان . However, upon arrival, IDF soldiers on the ground claimed that the military governor issued a decree, prohibiting Issa Amro from meeting the demonstrators (purportedly - security risk). However, regardless of repeat demands, the decree paper was never presented or duly served.
It is not the first incident of its kind. In a previous visit to Hebron, attempt was made to prevent Israeli, Jewish activists' meeting with Mr Amro under the claim that the IDF governor decreed the place, where the meeting was to be held (Tel-Rumeida) "Closed Military Zone". [2] On that occasion the decree papers were never served or presented either...
BACKGROUND: Hebron is one of the urban centers in Palestine with a population of over 200,000, with about 800 Jewish settlers, typically violent, in its midst. The most notorious violent incident was the 1994 Cave of the Patriarchs massacre, where 29 Palestinians were murdered, over 100 wounded in a mass shooting by an American-Israeli settler. [3] Following the incident, the Palestinian population was placed under total curfew for weeks, and a complex system of separate, Jews only streets, massive IDF security was established for the settlers, forcing Palestinians to abandon the business center of the city, wholesale market, the central bus station, hundreds of shops and homes.
Also, following that incident, the 6-nation, UN sponsored TIPH - Temporary International Presence in Hebron - was established, which "temporarily" patrols the city around the clock ever since. [4]
In short: Hebron is the most notorious example of the evil of the Israeli occupation of Palestine.
