Schröder betonte, er kenne “niemanden, auch nicht in Russland, der so verrückt wäre, es auch nur in Erwägung zu ziehen, die territoriale Integrität Polens oder der baltischen Staaten infrage zu stellen.” Eine objektive Betrachtung der Fakten zeigt das vollständige Gegenteil von dem was man Russland zum Vorwurf macht. Denn nicht Russland bedroht die territoriale Integrität anderer Staaten, sondern der Westen und die NATO bedrohen die territoriale Integrität der Russen. Schröder sagte dazu:
[...] Mit dem Ende der Sowjetunion hat der Warschauer Pakt aufgehört zu existieren, während die NATO nicht nur weiterbestand, sondern sich erheblich nach Osten ausgedehnt hat. [...]
Gerhard Schröder, Bundeskanzler von 1998 bis 2005, verstehe Russlands Bedenken, die mit der wachsenden Isolation des Landes zusammen hängen. Er bestand darauf, dass der Versuch Russland international zu isolieren “falsch” sei, denn die Verantwortung für die Krise in der Ukraine liegt bei “allen Beteiligten”. In diesem Konflikt haben “alle Seiten Fehler gemacht” und diese haben in “eine Spirale der Sanktionen, Drohungen und Gewaltanwendungen geführt.”
Der Sozialdemokrat kritisierte ebenfalls die Haltung der Kanzlerin in Bezug auf das EU-Assoziierungsabkommen. Sie hätte sich dafür einsetzen müssen, dass die EU-Kommission nicht “nur mit der Ukraine und nicht auch mit Russland über eine EU-Assoziierung verhandelte” und betonte, dass die “ukrainische Kultur in sich gespalten ist.” Auch den Ausschluss Russlands aus der G8 Gruppe verurteilte er scharf, denn “gerade in der Krise sind Gespräche zwingend erforderlich.”
