Formidables cavalcades dans le désert, somptueux préparatifs pour le pèlerinage de Nabi Moussa, déchéance dramatique d’un héros: si Shami ne verse jamais dans l’orientalisme à la mode pendant la première partie du XXe siècle, son écriture fait écho aux couleurs et aux odeurs du Salammbô de Flaubert. Et l’introspection dont il se montre capable a des accents dostoïevskiens! Ici, la foule est grouillante, bruyante, pressée, affairée. Les tatouages mouillés bleuissent sur la peau et brillent dans la lumière. Ailleurs, le héros, l’esprit errant et les lèvres flétries, se fait horreur jusqu’à la nausée. L’écriture de Shami a ceci de singulier que c’est depuis l’hébreu qu’elle dit une réalité arabe avec une empathie et une compréhension exceptionnelles. La traduction française des Nouvelles d’Hébron est un événement.
Le statut d’Yitzhaq Shami est tout à fait singulier: il est considéré à la fois comme juif et palestinien. Né en 1888, Shami parlait ladino avec sa mère et arabe avec son père. Appartenant à la communauté juive séfarade d’Hébron, il a grandi dans un milieu orthodoxe. Shami est mort à Haïfa à l’âge de soixante ans, en 1949
