With it Shami acquired a unique position in middle-eastern literature, since already in 2004, under the influence of Mahmoud Darwish, Shami was recognized as one of the important Palestinian writers of the 20th century.
עם זכייתו בפרס היום, רכש שמי מעמד מיוחד בספרות המזרח תיכונית, שכן כבר ב-2004 הכירה בו ההתאחדות האקדמאית הפלסטינית כאחד הסופרים הפלסטינים החשובים במאה ה-20.
