Report: NSA spied on EU institutions

According to a report in the German news magazine Der Spiegel, the US National Security Agency bugged institutions of the European Union. The magazine cited documents provided by whistle-blower Edward Snowden.

The documents, marked "top secret" and dated September 2010, specifically name the EU as a "target" for surveillance. The NSA appears to have had access to telephone calls, computer documents and emails.

Part of the surveillance included monitoring the Justus Lipsius building in Brussels (pictured above) where the European Council is housed.

DoD Blocks Millions of Computers From Viewing Alternative News

After the initial surge of web traffic to alternative news websites following The Guardian breaking the NSA spying story, traffic has slowed considerably despite the continued interest in the NSA story as well as other alternative headlines.

This dramatic drop in traffic may be due to broad censorship by the Department of Defense on "millions of computers".

What began as a rumor that the military brass was ordering soldiers not to view news about the whistleblower revelations that the NSA is spying on all Americans has swelled into a confirmed military-wide censorship campaign using a high-tech computer filtering system.

The US News and World Report is reporting that the DoD is blocking access to all articles related to the NSA scandal from all DoD computers. The filter reportedly effects millions of computers and potentially thousands of alternative news and civil liberties websites.

According to U.S. News:

The Department of Defense is blocking online access to news reports about classified National Security Agency documents made public by Edward Snowden. The blackout affects all of the department's computers and is part of a department-wide directive.

"Any website that runs information that the Department of Defense still considers classified" is affected, Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col. Damien Pickart told U.S. News in a phone interview. 

According to Pickart, news websites that re-report information first published by The Guardian or other primary sources are also affected. 

"If that particular website runs an article that our filters determine has classified information... the particular content on that website will remain inaccessible," he said.
Pickart said the blackout affects "millions" of computers on "all Department of Defense networks and systems."

This is perhaps one of the most shocking displays of blatant censorship in the history of the United States. The idea that classified information should still be treated as "off limits" to regular military personnel after its broad release to the public makes no sense.

Unless, of course, they don't want soldiers learning the truth about what their government is doing for fear that they may recognize who the true enemies of the Constitution are.

Or this may simply be a beta test of the government's technical capability to filter Internet traffic away from certain news stories and the websites that carry them.

In either case, this should be a HUGE story in itself.  Draconian Internet censorship has finally arrived in a big way.

California man faces 13 years in jail for scribbling anti-bank messages in chalk

Jeff Olson, the 40-year-old man who is being prosecuted for scrawling anti-megabank messages on sidewalks in water-soluble chalk last year now faces a 13-year jail sentence. A judge has barred his attorney from mentioning freedom of speech during trial.

According to the San Diego Reader, which reported on Tuesday that a judge had opted to prevent Olson’s attorney from "mentioning the First Amendment, free speech, free expression, public forum, expressive conduct, or political speech during the trial,” Olson must now stand trial for on 13 counts of vandalism. 

In addition to possibly spending years in jail, Olson will also be held liable for fines of up to $13,000 over the anti-big-bank slogans that were left using washable children's chalk on a sidewalk outside of three San Diego, California branches of Bank of America, the massive conglomerate that received $45 billion in interest-free loans from the US government in 2008-2009 in a bid to keep it solvent after bad bets went south. 

The Reader reports that Olson’s hearing had gone as poorly as his attorney might have expected, with Judge Howard Shore, who is presiding over the case, granting Deputy City Attorney Paige Hazard's motion to prohibit attorney Tom Tosdal from mentioning the United States' fundamental First Amendment rights. 

"The State's Vandalism Statute does not mention First Amendment rights," ruled Judge Shore on Tuesday.

Upon exiting the courtroom Olson seemed to be in disbelief. 

"Oh my gosh," he said. "I can't believe this is happening." 

Tosdal, who exited the courtroom shortly after his client, seemed equally bewildered. 

"I've never heard that before, that a court can prohibit an argument of First Amendment rights," said Tosdal. 

Olson, who worked as a former staffer for a US Senator from Washington state, was said to involve himself in political activism in tandem with the growth of the Occupy Wall Street movement. 

On October 3, 2011, Olson first appeared outside of a Bank of America branch in San Diego, along with a homemade sign. Eight days later Olson and his partner, Stephen Daniels, during preparations for National Bank Transfer Day, the two were confronted by Darell Freeman, the Vice President of Bank of America’s Global Corporate Security. 

A former police officer, Freeman accused Olson and Daniels of “running a business outside of the bank,” evidently in reference to the National Bank Transfer Day activities, which was a consumer activism initiative that sought to promote Americans to switch from commercial banks, like Bank of America, to not-for-profit credit unions. 

At the time, Bank of America’s debit card fees were among one of the triggers that led Occupy Wall Street members to promote the transfer day. 

"It was just an empty threat," says Olson of Freeman’s accusations. "He was trying to scare me away. To be honest, it did at first. I even called my bank and they said he couldn't do anything like that." 

Olson continued to protest outside of Bank of America. In February 2012, he came across a box of chalk at a local pharmacy and decided to begin leaving his mark with written statements. 

"I thought it was a perfect way to get my message out there. Much better than handing out leaflets or holding a sign," says Olson. 

Over the course of the next six months Olson visited the Bank of America branch a few days per week, leaving behind scribbled slogans such as "Stop big banks" and "Stop Bank Blight.com." 

According to Olson, who spoke with local broadcaster KGTV, one Bank of America branch claimed it had cost $6,000 to clean up the chalk writing. 

Public records obtained by the Reader show that Freeman continued to pressure members of San Diego’s Gang Unit on behalf of Bank of America until the matter was forwarded to the City Attorney’s office. 

On April 15, Deputy City Attorney Paige Hazard contacted Freeman with a response on his persistent queries. 

"I wanted to let you know that we will be filing 13 counts of vandalism as a result of the incidents you reported," said Hazard. 

Arguments for Olson’s case are set to be heard Wednesday morning, following jury selection.

Whistleblower says Obama received financial aid as foreign student

Concerned about fraud being committed and Obama, being a citizen of Indonesia, was never eligible to be president of the United States

SANTA ANA, Calif. – While Attorney Orly Taitz was participating in a rally in front of the U.S. Capitol on June 19, a whistleblower from Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) in Albany, N.Y. approached her to say she personally reviewed the microfilm of President Barack Obama’s financial aid and it reveals he received financial aid as a foreign student and a citizen of Indonesia. 

Taitz was provided the woman’s name, work and personal e-mail address, home and cell phone numbers and independently verified the whistleblower’s employment. 

Further, Taitz learned that when Obama transferred from Occidental College to Columbia University, his financial aid would indeed be handled by HESC in Albany. 

The whistleblower also advised Taitz that HESC’s policy is to retain microfilm of records in the company’s safe and said several HESC employees made copies of the microfilm in the event management decides to destroy the evidence. 

According to Taitz, the whistleblower came forward because she is concerned about fraud being committed and Obama, being a citizen of Indonesia, was never eligible to be president of the United States. 

The information was submitted by Taitz to Division Three of the Fourth Appellate District Court of Appeal in California, noting the new information is of important and urgent public concern and weighs in favor of granting her appeal in the case of Taitz v. Obama, Feinstein, Emken (G047746). 

Because of fear of retaliation by Obama and the Obama administration, Taitz asked the court to allow the whistleblower to be able to submit identification information under seal and any testimony to be done in camera (in private).

13-06-26 NSA threat? Patrick Leahy to the rescue...

Patrick Leahy is a joke.  After who knows how many years as Chair of the Senate's Judiciary Committee, he called in 2009 for a Truth and Reconciliation Commission on the US DOJ.  

Such commissions are typically established after toppling a dictatorship.  As one who colluded with the offending regime, Leahy should have resigned.  Instead, he  stayed on as Chair of the Judiciary Committee and totally forgot about the need for a Truth and Reconciliation Commission on the US DOJ...   

Not exactly the right person to protect us against NSA....  

I for one expect more effective help from Ecuador than Leahy and the US Congress in this matter...

June 24, 2013 "Information Clearing House - "NY Times" -- Speaking at a news conference in Vietnam on Monday, Ecuador’s foreign minister, Ricardo Patiño, said that his government was considering a written request for asylum from Edward J. Snowden, the former national security contractor accused of espionage by the United States.

In remarks the foreign ministry streamed live from Hanoi, Mr. Patiño suggested that Mr. Snowden “is being persecuted” for revealing the vast scale of the National Security Agency’s surveillance of electronic communications worldwide. “The word treason has been batted around in recent days,” Mr. Patiño said, “we need to ask who has betrayed who?”

Here, based on a simultaneous translation from Spanish to English broadcast by the BBC, are excerpts from the letter Mr. Snowden sent to President Rafael Correa, as read aloud by Mr. Patiño:

I, Edward Snowden, citizen of the United States of America, am writing to request asylum in the Republic of Ecuador because of the risk of being persecuted by the government of the United States and its agents in relation to my decision to make public serious violations on the part of the government of the United States of its Constitution, specifically of its Fourth and Fifth Amendments, and of various treaties of the United Nations that are binding on my country.

As a result of my political opinions, and my desire to exercise my freedom of speech, through which I’ve shown that the government of the United States is intercepting the majority of communications in the world, the government of the United States has publicly announced a criminal investigation against me. Also, prominent members of Congress and others in the media have accused me of being a traitor and have called for me to be jailed or executed as a result of having communicated this information to the public.

The 2010 submission of Human Rights Alert to the Human Rights Council (HRC) of the United Nations was incorporated in the official HRC Professional Staff Report with a note referring to “corruption of the courts and the legal profession and discrimination by law enforcement in California.”
