13-10-14 Jeremy Hammond's sentencing scheduled for tomorrow in the Stratfor leaking case

On the Hammond and the Stratfor leaking case from Wikipedia,(the propaganda organ):

Hammond was involved in the leaking of emails of the private spying agency Stratfor through the whistle-blowing website Wikileaks.

Among the public figures who have spoken in support of Jeremy’s release are Yes Men activist Andy Bichlbaum, journalistJohn Knefel, Pulitzer Prize-winning former New York Times journalist Chris HedgesBhopal activist Saif Ansari, Center for Constitutional Rights President Emeritus Michael Ratner, journalist Alexa O’Brien, National Lawyers Guild Executive Director Heidi Boghosian Icelandic parliamentarian Birgitta Jónsdóttir, and Northwestern University philosophy professor Peter Ludlow.

Email content[edit]

One of the first items released was an email containing a glossary titled "The Stratfor Glossary of Useful, Baffling and Strange Intelligence Terms", which contained concise and sometimes humorously candid definitions, along with pointed assessments of U.S. intelligence and law enforcement.[6]

Stratfor[edit]

Some emails reveal that Stratfor had been partnering with Shea Morenz, a former Goldman Sachs director, along with other informants, in order to profit from what could be considered insider trading. Stratfor planned to use the intelligence it gathered in order to profit from trading in several worldwide markets. They created an offshore "share structure" known as "StratCap" during 2011, in order to avoid insider trading allegations. The offshore entity, set to launch operations in 2012, is outwardly independent of Stratfor, but CEO George Friedman told his employees that StratCap is secretly integrated with Stratfor.[7][8]
Friedman stated in an email that in order to avoid legal repercussions from these activities, the company would be "retaining a law firm to create a policy for Stratfor on the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act."[8]
Thomas Kavaler, who was once a lawyer for a Stratfor client, had his email and the password to his email account released in the leak. He is married to Judge Preska, who denied Jeremy Hammond's bail; the hearing was held eight months into Hammond's imprisonment. [9] This apparent conflict of interest has led many observers to question the legality of her ruling. [10]

Governmental[edit]

An email involving a Stratfor analyst stated that it had been determined that up to 12 officials in Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency knew of Osama bin-Laden's safe house.[11] Another email indicated that Stratfor Vice President Fred Burton had knowledge of the killing of bin Laden, and that the body was not dumped at sea, but rather sent to Dover Air Force Base in the United States.[12] This further fueled doubts about the US Government's account of the killings.[13]
Ynetnews reported that, according to internal emails between Stratfor employees, Israel and Russia were engaged in an exchange of information in 2008. Israel gave Russia "'data link codes' for unmanned aerial vehicles that the Jewish state sold to Georgia" and that Russia gave "the codes for Tor-M1 missile defense systems that Russia sold Iran". The emails also stated that, during the 2008 South Ossetia war, Georgia "realized that their UAVs were compromised and were looking for a replacement for the Israeli made drones".[14]
International Business Times reported that Stratfor had found that several Central European countries, especially the Czech Republic, have been petitioning NATO for missile defenses and F-16s to use against Russia. The Czech Republic, according to an unknown Stratfor source, has stated that, if the talks with the US fail, then it will be breaking all ties with NATO and the US in general.[15]
Business Insider reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was an intelligence source for Stratfor between 2007 and 2010. In emails, Fred Burton discussed his personal communications with Netanyahu. Burton stated by email that Netanyahu informed him of his success in consolidating power within the Likud party ahead of regaining the position of prime minister, shared thoughts regarding his distrust of US President Barack Obama, threatened assassination of Hezbollah leaderHasan Nasrallah, and declared intentions to unilaterally start a war against Iran.[16]
Al Akhbar, citing internal emails from the Stratfor hack, reported former Blackwater director James F. Smith had a relationship with Stratfor and was for a time considered one of their major sources. Emails appeared to show that Smith participated in the murder of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, and had more recently been assigned to aid the rebellion against the government of Bashar Assad in Syria. In relation to his assignment to Syria, Smith requested an intelligence overview of the Syrian opposition from his Stratfor briefers.[17]
Over 40,000 documents related with information gathering from Venezuela including the status of the army (equipment, numbers, plans) and other sensitive information were also released. Various attempts overthrowing the government of Hugo Chavez are described from sources inside Venezuela (various names are referred like Antonio Ledezma (Caracas major), Henrique Capriles (opposition leader), Leopoldo Lopez, Rafael Poleo (Media tycoon). Many papers involve CANVAS, as one of the main strategic counsel. One of the documents is titled "how to guide to revolution". [18] [19] [20]

Companies[edit]

As reported by The Times of India, some of the emails reveal that Stratfor was allegedly hired by Dow Chemical Company to spy on protesters of the Bhopal disaster.[3] Dow Chemical Company responded with a written statement that read: "Major companies are often required to take appropriate action to protect their people and safeguard their facilities," and that it had not broken any laws.[4]
The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported that, according to some of the released emails, the Coca-Cola Company paid Stratfor to determine "to what extent will US-based PETA supporters travel to Canada to support activism" at the 2010 Olympics. The Coca-Cola Company responded to the emails with a statement saying that they "consider it prudent to monitor for protest activities at any major event we sponsor".[21]

Wikileaks[edit]

Emails from Fred Burton (Stratfor’s Vice-President for Counterterrorism and Corporate Security, and former Deputy Chief of the Department of State) reveal a United States Government secret indictment against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.[22]
Other emails discredit the rape allegations against Assange.[23]

Letters Desperately Needed For Jeremy Hammond's Sentencing by 10/15

The time is now to support Jeremy Hammond



"You don't have to know Jeremy to help, you just have to care" 

~ Jeremy's friend Grace said that at the #FreeHammond/#FreeBB fundraiser in NY in August.  It is doubtless true.  Jeremy Hammond is a prisoner pending sentencing for computer hacking crimes. His crimes were acts of civil disobedience, acts of protest against an encroaching surveillance state. He is part of a new breed of electronic dissident, a list populated by such pop heroes as Edward SnowdenChelsea ManningBarrett BrownJulian Assange and the PayPal14.   Jeremy faces a maximum of 10 years under the plea agreement he signed.  The government will want the full 10 years.  Will you please help us ask the judge for less time?  

Jeremy’s sentencing is not going to be delayed any further.  It will go forward mid-November.  Letters to the court in support of Jeremy need to be in by no later than the 15th of October so they can be submitted to the court - that means you should do it now - TODAY! This is important. If you care about Jeremy Hammond, the freedom of the internet or the encroaching surveillance state, you need to take action on this now - this is the opportunity to have your voice heard on this matter.  Any and all help that you all can give, including both passing this along and writing your own letter to the court about why they should not give Jeremy 10 years is not only appreciated, but is desperately needed.   Please spread this message around and let’s get as many letters as we can and let’s make sure they are all thoughtful and powerful.  This is important for Jeremy and important for freedom. Please speak now on this crucial issue.


WHO IS JEREMY HAMMOND?
Jeremy Hammond is a gifted young computer programmer facing a decade in prison. His crime? Leaking information from the private intelligence firm Strategic Forecasting, information which revealed that Stratfor had been spying on human rights activists at the behest of corporations and the U.S. government.


In March 2012 Jeremy was arrested in his Chicago home and charged with violations of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, the same legislation used to prosecute Aaron Swartz. This outdated law, written before the Internet was even created, gives absurdly broad powers to corporations and prosecutors to criminalize an array of online activity and pursue extreme and disproportionate sentences. By contrast, of Jeremy’s co-defendants in Ireland and in the U.K. none will spend more than 16 months in prison, and many have been released already.


Jeremy has been denied bail, cut off from his family, and held in solitary confinement– treatment normally reserved for the most egregious offenses. He did nothing for personal gain and everything in hopes of making the world a better place. He is facing a maximum sentence of ten years, but the minimum is zero. He has been jailed since March 2012 awaiting trial and now sentencing. It’s time for him to come home.

Anonymous Letters
It is much better if letters are signed, have the appearance of coming from real people, and have return addresses. That means, for example, printing out an email as opposed to forwarding it (and its metadata), or downloading a document from jabber and printing it. Jeremy Hammond's sentencing hearing is set for Friday, November 15 at 10am at the Federal District Court for  the Southern District of New York.  We are collecting letters of support on his behalf. Please submit your letter by October 15, 2013 so that it can be included in our submission to the Court. Please do not send your letter directly to the Court – it will not be read. Below is a suggested template for support letters.

BODY OF LETTER: Briefly discuss yourself – who you are, your position in work or your role in the community. If you are not personally acquainted with Jeremy, tell the Judge why you are interested in his case. State that you are aware that Jeremy has pled guilty to a violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. Tell the Judge why you believe he should be treated with compassion.

If you know Jeremy personally, and can offer some personal observations, you will want to mention this in your letter.  It would be helpful to include:

·         Jeremy's character, compassion, integrity, accomplishments, interests, relationships, interaction with and treatment of other people, and your personal and/or professional relationship with him. 
·         If there are specific anecdotes that will help the reader develop a better picture of Jeremy, we encourage you to share those.  It is a good idea to include a brief description of you:  your occupation, activities in which you might be involved and any other points which will establish your identity and your ability to advise the court about Jeremy.   


If you would like to address the disparate treatment of Jeremy's co-defendants, or put his case in the context of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (“CFAA”), you may want to mention some of the following points:

·         Jeremy's co-defendants in Ireland and in the United Kingdom were given treatment that is disparate, those who are already convicted will not spend more than 16 months in prison, some have already been released
·         The disproportionate sentences associated with the CFAA, or that the protection the CFAA affords to corporations is greater than those it affords to individuals, who may be subjected to surveillance by private corporations such as Stratfor. Whether you know Jeremy or not, you may want to mention that he had no financial gain from his actions, which he undertook as politically-motivated acts of civil disobedience. Do not try to argue that Jeremy is not guilty or was unfairly convicted. You are asking the Judge for leniency. 

Since this is not an effort to mislead or create a false impression, you are encouraged to write an honest, straightforward word portrait of Jeremy.  Do not hesitate to write from the heart, and/or emphasize anything you feel is important.  One of the goals of your letter is to enable the reader to see Jeremy through your eyes.

It is best to write in plain, everyday, conversational language, as if you were speaking to the reader.  If possible, your letter should be typewritten, and, if appropriate, on business stationary, and addressed to me.  I will deliver it to the parties that will be reading it.

If you are anonymous and wish to remain anonymous, please give enough identifying information about you to allow the reader to understand who it is that you are, without giving too much information.  For example, if you use a Twitter handle, you may use that as your identification.  You can identify simply as a member of a particular group.  Please do not fail to write a letter because you do not to give your full name and/or other identifying information to the government.  We can work with whatever limitations there are.

Truckers for the US Constitution provided an excellent example for Freedom of the Press and the freedom of demonstration in the US today -
On the one hand, some media ignored the case altogether, others were busy in undermining its scope, significance and integrity, and on the other hand, eventually, the truckers did make an impact and were stooped...
Someone here calimed sometime ago that there are hardly any serious demonstrations in the US today, regardless of current conditions, because there is nothing to demonstrate against...
The November 5th Million Mask March - planned in major cities around the world - will be the next test for fundamental rights in the United States today. 
NBC with "Constitution" in quotation mark was a prime example of the state of US media today.
