13-07-06 US: Moving towards more corporate/government corruption...

The current Greater Depression, like its counterpart a century ago, is driven by government/corporate corruption.  Any attempt to address the situation would require corrective actions.  But as it looks today, the US is heading the other way - increased government/corporate corruption...  In short: it is unlikely that the current Depression would go away anytime soon. jz

Reining In the Regulators


For all its rabid partisanship, Congress has shown time and again that it is willing to come together to deregulate corporate America. The latest example is a new bill in the Senate that would effectively end the independence of independent regulatory agencies, including the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the National Labor Relations Board.

Sabotage at the Election Commission


The Federal Election Commission is already in a state of wretched dysfunction, but it will only get worse if Republican members succeed in crippling the agency further when the commission meets on Thursday. The three Republicans on the commission appear ready to take advantage of a temporary vacancy on the three-member Democratic side to push through 3-to-2 votes for a wholesale retreat from existing regulations.
Under their proposals, agency workers would no longer be allowed to routinely forward information about potential criminal violations by campaigners to the Justice Department, and the commission’s staff investigators would be severely hobbled in conducting preliminary inquiries. This would provide further aid and comfort to politicians and operatives who run roughshod over campaign laws.
