11-11-11 Rabbi Michael Lerner: Praying With Our Feet at Occupy Oakland // El rabino Michael Lerner: Orar con los pies en el Ocupar Oakland// 犹太教教士迈克尔勒纳:我们的脚下祈祷占据奥克兰

Thanks to Rabbi Lerner for again stating the obvious loud and clear!
[]  Emacs! []
Los Angeles, November 11 - Tikkun's Rabbi Michael Lerner has called in a Huffington Post opinion piece for "Praying With Our Feet at Occupy Oakland"  Moreover, in it, Rabbi Lerner invokes the historic commitment of the US Jewish community to Human Rights, in the footsteps of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel. [i]

Rabbi Lerner's call for 'praying with our feet in Occupy Oakland,' must be particularly noticed in view of the large-scale abuse of Constitutional, Civil, and Human Rights, associated with the current crisis, including, but not limited to the Freedom of Speech, Freedom of the Press, and Freedom of Assembly, Fair Hearings, and Access to the Courts. [ii]

Rabbi Lerner again shows his commitment to the cause:

  • Rabbi Michael Lerner was unique among rabbis, who had been asked, in his willingness to opine on the Los Angeles Jewish Federation and Bet Tzedek refusal to respond on allegations of high level financial fraud by Sandor Samuels and others, current and former leaders of Bet Tzedek ("The House of Justice"). [iii]
  • Privately, Rabbi Lerner also opined on refusal of ADL National Director Abraham Foxman to respond on allegations of racketeering in the courts among the leaders of the Log Angeles Jewish/legal community. [iv]
  • Rabbi Lerner was one of several rabbis and priests, who joined the call for ending the death penalty in California. [v]
Thanks again to Rabbi Lerner for stating the obvious loud and clear! [vi]

Why Is the Oakland Police Department Hiding the Truth About Its Violent Crackdown on the Occupy Protests?

Oakland police appear to have violated their own guidelines, and now they're refusing to release documents to civil rights attorneys as required by law.Emacs!

November 9, 2011

After three notably violent crackdowns on protesters in as many weeks, Oakland Police Department officials have refused a request by the ACLU of Northern California to release police reports documenting their use of force as required by law.

“We saw events that we found extremely troubling, and which violated provisions of Oakland's own crowd control policy,” Linda Lye, a staff attorney with ACLU of Northern California told AlterNet.

After recent police actions in Oakland gained national attention, “there was a lot of lip service paid to transparency and accountability and the public's interest in monitoring the situation,” she said. “But then OPD proceeded to say that it was invoking one of the statutory exceptions to the Public Records Act for the vast majority of our requests.”

Uploaded by RussiaToday on Nov 5, 2011
On November 4, Occupy DC demonstrators had gathered to protest the Defending the American Dream summit at the Washington Convention Center. Occupy DC marched from McPherson Square to the convention center Friday evening - when a driver plowed into the crowd of protesters, injuring two. Police officers had let the driver go. This prompted angry cries from the crowd, at which point officers started scuffling with protesters, in the end arresting 3 of the demonstrators in the street.

US Cops Try to Erase Online Evidence of Brutality

Uploaded by fal2grace on Oct 26, 2011
RussiaToday--Oct 26, 2011--Google has been asked by a US law enforcement agency to remove several videos exposing police brutality from the video sharing service YouTube, the company has revealed in its latest update to an online transparency report. Another request filed by a different agency required Google to remove videos allegedly defaming law enforcement officials. The two requests were among 92 submissions for content removal by various authorities in the US filed between January and June 2011. Both were rejected by Google along with 27 per cent of the submissions. The IT giant says the overall number f requests for content removal it receives from governmental agencies has risen, and so has the number of requests to disclose the private data of Google users.

Police have clashed with hundreds of demonstrators in the U.S. city of Oakland. It happened when hundreds marched to show their anger at police clearing an "Occupy Wall Street" camp. Officers shot several rounds of tear gas into the crowd, who were trying to reclaim their position within the city centre. Earlier on Tuesday, 85 people were arrested, after they refused to take down their tents as part of the nationwide movement against corporate greed.

I was reading the below in Wikipedia and got entirely confused:

  • Am I a paleoconservative, or a leftist radical???
  • Is one a conspiracy theorist, if one supports (which I do NOT have an opinion on) that the Commission, specifically, gained excessive power as an unaccountable body (like several other, such as the Federal Reserve, which is, surprise, surprise, over represented in the Commission), when the below shows consensus on the matter from the far right to the far left???

Am I a paleoconservative, or a leftist radical... can't tell the difference any more...

____
Trilateral Commission

Emacs!
...

Membership

Membership is divided into numbers proportionate to each of the think tank's three regional areas. The North American continent is represented by 120 members (20 Canadian, 13 Mexican and 87 U.S. citizens). The European group has reached its limit of 170 members from almost every country on the continent; the ceilings for individual countries are 20 for Germany, 18 for France, Italy and the United Kingdom, 12 for Spain and 1–6 for the rest. At first, Asia and Oceania were represented only by Japan. However, in 2000 the Japanese group of 85 members expanded itself, becoming the Pacific Asia group, composed of 117 members: 75 Japanese, 11 South Koreans, 7 Australianand New Zealand citizens, and 15 members from the ASEANnations (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand). The Pacific Asia group also included 9 members from China, Hong Kong andTaiwan. Currently, the Trilateral Commission claims "more than 100" Pacific Asian members. [1]

While Trilateral Commission bylaws exclude persons holding public office from membership [3], the think tank draws its participants from political, business, and academic worlds. The group is chaired by three individuals, one from each of the regions represented. The current chairman are former U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs Joseph S. Nye, Jr. , [2] former Attorney General of Ireland and current chairman ofGoldman Sachs International Peter Sutherland, and Chief Corporate Adviser, Fuji Xerox Company, Ltd. Yotaro Kobayashi . [3]

Criticisms

Sensing its ability to foster international cooperation, a number of prominent thinkers and politicians on the far left and far right have criticized the Trilateral Commission. On the right, in his book With No Apologies, former conservative Republican Senator Barry Goldwater lambasted the discussion group by suggesting it was "a skillful, coordinated effort to seize control and consolidate the four centers of power: political, monetary, intellectual, and ecclesiastical...[in] the creation of a worldwide economic power superior to the political governments of the nation-states involved." [4] On the left, linguist Noam Chomsky criticized a report issued by the Commission called The Crisis of Democracy for suggesting that there was an "excess of democracy" in the 1960s and defending "the ideology of the liberal wing of the state capitalist ruling elite". Chomsky also argues that the group had an undue influence in the administration of Jimmy Carter . [5]

Conspiracy theories

While the Trilateral Commission is only one of many similar think tanks on the right and left, many notable conspiracy theorists believe the organization to be a central plotter of a world government or synarchy. As documented by journalist Jonathan Kay, 9/11 conspiracy theorist Luke Rudkowski gained notoriety in April 2007 by interrupting a lecture by former Trilateral Commission director Zbigniew Brzezinski and accusing the organization and a few others of having orchestrated the attacks of September 11th to initiate a new world order. [6] Conservative and right-wing groups such as the John Birch Society and conspiracy theorists such as American paleoconservative Alex Jonesalso regularly tout this idea. [7] [8]

11-11-08 Former Judge Terry Friedman's Career Move?

Former Judge Terry Friedman
Los Angeles Superior Court

Former Judge Terry Friedman has been often featured on these pages.
Therefore, questions were forwarded to this blog author, regarding Friedman's recent career moves:

1) Why he left his job at the LA Superior Court 5 years early?
2) Why he went to work for the San Diego enterprise of ADR?

Any information on this matter would be greatly appreciated, for the public's good...

The impetus behind #OWS is to bring together the 99% who do not own the world, and to provide a venue to address the greed and corruption which has brought America to its knees. By focusing the attention on Wall Street and the financial institutions, #OWS may be missing a prime target for the corruption that has taken over our country—the courts.

Because of decisions rendered by our courts, millions of people are losing their homes. Because of decisions rendered by courts, families are being torn apart and children are being taken from their parents. Because of decisions rendered by courts, our elderly and disabled are losing all their rights and all access to their assets through guardianship proceedings which only stand to benefit attorneys and the guardians. These “civil” proceedings are shredding the most fundamental unit of our society, which is the family.

Why Iceland Should Be in the News, But Is Not
By Deena Stryker

An Italian radio program's story about Icelands on-going revolution is a stunning example of how little our media tells us about the rest of the world. Americans may remember that at the start of the 2008 financial crisis, Iceland literally went bankrupt.  The reasons were mentioned only in passing, and since then, this little-known member of the European Union fell back into oblivion.

As one European country after another fails or risks failing, imperiling the Euro, with repercussions for the entire world, the last thing the powers that be want is for Iceland to become an example. Here's why:

Five years of a pure neo-liberal regime had made Iceland, (population 320 thousand, no army), one of the richest countries in the world. In 2003 all the countrys banks were privatized, and in an effort to attract foreign investors, they offered on-line banking whose minimal costs allowed them to offer relatively high rates of return. The accounts, called IceSave, attracted many English and Dutch small investors.  But as investments grew, so did the banks foreign debt.  In 2003 Icelands debt was equal to 200 times its GNP, but in 2007, it was 900 percent.  The 2008 world financial crisis was the coup de grace. The three main Icelandic banks, Landbanki, Kapthing and Glitnir, went belly up and were nationalized, while the Kroner lost 85% of its value with respect to the Euro.  At the end of the year Iceland declared bankruptcy.

Contrary to what could be expected, the crisis resulted in Icelanders recovering their sovereign rights, through a process of direct participatory democracy that eventually led to a new Constitution.  But only after much pain.

Bank of America & The Great Derivatives Transfer

Published 1, November 6, 2011

Submitted by Elaine Magliaro, Guest Blogger

In an article titled Another Weapon for OWS: Pull Your Money Out of BofA, Matt Taibbi wrote that when it comes to commercial banking, Bank of America is as bad as it gets. He said he believed the markets seemed to agree as the bank had a credit downgrade recently to just above junk status.

He continued: The only reason the bank is not rated even lower than that is that it is Too Big To Fail. The whole world knows that if Bank of America implodes whether because of the vast number of fraud suits it faces for mortgage securitization practices, or because of the time bomb of toxic assets on its balance sheets the U.S. government will probably step in to one degree or another and save it.

After the credit downgrade in September, Bloomberg reported that Bank of America moved derivatives from its Merrill Lynch unit to a subsidiary flush with insured deposits Taibbi said the transfer involved trillions of dollars in risky derivatives contracts.

According to Bloomberg: The Federal Reserve and Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. disagree over the transfers, which are being requested by counterparties, said the people, who asked to remain anonymous because they werent authorized to speak publicly. The Fed has signaled that it favors moving the derivatives to give relief to the bank holding company, while the FDIC, which would have to pay off depositors in the event of a bank failure, is objecting, said the people. The bank doesnt believe regulatory approval is needed, said people with knowledge of its position.

Heres how Ryan Chittum explained it in the Columbia Review of Journalism: Bank of America moved risky insurance contracts to a taxpayer-insured company, ostensibly to save money. The FDIC, which would now be on the hook for losses if the derivatives collapse, is not happy, and the move raises more questions about the health of Bank of America, which has already seen its market value sliced in half this year.

Kirsten Pittman reported in The Charlotte Observer that more than a dozen Democratic members of Congress are concerned about the reported transfer of financial instruments from Merrill Lynch into the banks deposit-taking armwhich they say could put taxpayers on the hook for big losses three years after the bank received billions in bailouts from the federal government. The Congressmen wrote to federal regulators to ask why they allowed the movement of derivatives into the retail bank, which has deposits that are insured by the FDIC. In a statement, Rep. Brad Miller of North Carolina said, This kind of transaction raises many issues of obvious public concern. If the bank subsidiary failed, innocent taxpayers could end up paying off exotic derivatives.

William Black, a professor of economics and law at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and a former bank regulator, said, The concern is that there is always an enormous temptation to dump the losers on the insured institution. We should have fairly tight restrictions on that.

So much for financial reform. Just three years ago, Bank of America received $45 billion in bailout money during the financial crisis. It doesnt seem that much has changed since 2008, does it?
