Houston officer kills double amputee in wheelchair

HOUSTON (AP) — A Houston police officer shot and killed a one-armed, one-legged man in a wheelchair Saturday inside a group home after police say the double amputee threatened the officer and aggressively waved a metal object that turned out to be a pen.

Police spokeswoman Jodi Silva said the man cornered the officer in his wheelchair and was making threats while trying to stab the officer with the pen. At the time, the officer did not know what the metal object was that the man was waving, Silva said.

She said the man came "within inches to a foot" of the officer and did not follow instructions to calm down and remain still.

"Fearing for his partner's safety and his own safety, he discharged his weapon," Silva told The Associated Press.

Police did not immediately release the name of the man who was killed. They had been called to the home after a caretaker there called and reported that the man in wheelchair was causing a disturbance.

The owner of the group home, John Garcia, told the Houston Chronicle that the man had a history of mental illness and had been living at the house about 18 months. Garcia said the man had told him that he lost a leg above the knee and all of one arm when he was hit by a train.

"He sometimes would go off a bit, but you just ignore it," Garcia told the newspaper.

Silva identified the officer as Matthew Jacob Marin, a five-year veteran of the department. He was immediately placed on three-day administrative leave, which is standard in all shootings involving officers.

Houston police records indicate that Marin also fatally shot a suspect in 2009. Investigators at the time said Marin came upon a man stabbing his neighbor to death at an apartment complex and opened fired when the suspect refused to drop the knife.

On Saturday, Marin and his partner arrived at the group home around 2:30 a.m.Silva said there were several people at the house at the time. The caretaker who called police waited on the porch while the officers went inside, she said.

"It was close quarters in the area of the house," Silva said. "The officer was forced into an area where he had no way to get out."

As soon as TARP was established, I called the office of Barofsky and provided them detailed information that Bank of America (and Countrywide, it subsidiary) is managed as a corrupt and racketeer influenced organization, pursuant to RICO.  Accordingly, I claimed that TARP should prevent Bank of America from getting any TARP money.  Needless to say, no action was taken on the evidence by TARP that I know of.  Now the Barofsky himself advertises the bailout system as corrupt.

Barofsky shares his perspective from serving in his position for both the Bush and Obama administrations.  He describes his efforts to ensure against fraud and abuse in the spending of $700 billion allocated for the Troubled Asset Relief Program.  He explains how he established the office of SIGTARP, and built it to 140 employees who had won criminal convictions of 18 people, and was continuing work on 153 pending civil and criminal investigations when he resigned in 2011.  He relates his constant struggle with officials at the Treasury Department, as his office made more than 68 recommendations to protect taxpayers from losses in the programs.  He offers accounts of his behind the scenes conflicts with Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and other representatives from the Treasury department.  Barofsky talks about his prior job as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York and comments on what it was like to work for the federal government in Washington, DC.
Neil Barofsky is currently a Senior Fellow at the New York University School of Law where he received his law degree in 1995.  He was Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York for eight years.  From December 2008 until March 2011, he was the Special Inspector General in charge of oversight of the Troubled Asset Relief Program.  This is his first book.  He is married, has two children and lives in New York.

12-09-23 Barcelona – Merce 2012 – Bravissima!

Shoko Shoko in Placa Catalunya, would be a rave party in Placa de Reial, while Love of Lesbians are the local kings.  Today, only Messi/FCB, Catalonian Independence, and resistance to the banksters can get Catalans excited.  Once they get the latter two issues accomplished, they would get more excited about dancing and music.  In the meanwhile, La Merce could benefit from more visitors from abroad, to liven up the party.

BBarcelona, September 23 – I hardly pulled myself out of bed at 12:30pm, went out for a breakfast of queso fresco cubes with tomatoes and thinly sliced onion rings with the obligatory café con leche, and review the local papers.   La Vanguardia’s main headline above the fold:  Parliament is preparing a proclamation of sovereignty, with inside sections reviewing the manifold implications of such unilateral move; below the fold – thousands cram into the old facory Damm de Barcelona for a pop-rock concert, with inside section proclaiming the male pop-rock group Love of Lesbians the unchallenged Kings of La Merce.  I could not get the number of those who attended last night, but the number for the corresponding concert in 2010 was 15,000!  For some unknown reasons, both headlines were glossed over in the online edition of the same publication… For example, on La Merce the online edition keeps harping Convivencia y Respect, and no mention of the pending Proclamation of Sovereignty by Parliament.

Last night brought to the front a deep philosophical, existential question, why the Catalans don’t move their butts…

I started the evening late, as usual, at Placa de Catalunya.  Around midnight a concert was just beginning of a South African group, hereinafter designated “Shoko Shoko”.  These two words were often used, in double, treble, or quadruple entendres.   The lead singer was black, dressed in colorful pajamas.  Most of the instrumentalists (some 4 electric guitars, a keyboard, two in the brass section) were white, except for a couple of drummers on conga and jemba drums.  There were also three white sixties-style girls providing soprano harmonies in the back, and several gogo girls and gogo boys, shoko shoko, which would have been perfectly at ease with Josephine Baker.  One of the gogo girls performed part of the time in blackface, which in the United States would have been considered a major racial slur. 

The music was super.  There first few songs were sexually explicit in both verbally and in body language, meant to get the crowd going.  There were also a song dedicated to the Mothers, and another one, Love of My Heart, which the lead singer explained was from his native region.  The impressive, mostly instrumental piece, South African Buffaloes, showed the drummers at their best.

The sound system was fabulous, two huge three-story towers, all perfectly equalized in advance.   The effect was that you could hear the concert almost equally well at any part of the huge square, and a block or so beyond. 

The problem was with the People.  At some 5,00o people, the placa could have easily held much larger numbers.  The crowd was older than the crowd at the Museum of Contemporary Art the night before (I guess all the younger folk were at the Damm), and a good part of them were elegant and middle-aged, a fatal combination, who appeared to have come as spectators, but not participants in the fiesta.  If you took the blacks in the crowd out of the equation, hardly anybody was dancing.  One middle-aged seniora, in her staple, little black cocktail dress and oversized glass jewelry (you wouldn’t wear the family jewels en la calle…) was watching me with total disgust.  Part of it may have been that she thought I was engaging in lewd public conduct - I was just doing modest middle eastern pelvic gyrations and flexions on a base of Los Angeles techno.  The other part may have been that she mistook me for a priest misbehaving.  It happened before, no matter how many times I explain that my garb is of uno terrorista internacional... 

There was no need to ask anybody what the political views of the Shoko Shoko were.  It was clear by their composition.  They also repeatedly proclaimed, we are here in Barcelona, Catalunya, and never mentioned the word “Spain”.  However,  when the group failed to get the crowd energized and dancing, at one point the lead singer called to the crowd “Tranquilos”, and shouted “Wake up Barcelona!”  They just went on drinking beer and smoking pot.

The same group in Los Angeles could definitely get the crowd going, and in Tel Aviv, people would have been jumping up and down even before the music started.

On La Rambla, around 2:00am, it was super packed.  Some youth were singing old rock n roll standards and dancing.  I was asked for a dance by one of the prostitutes, and accepted.  She seemed surprised that I could do the old rock n roll…

Just a couple of blocks away, in Placa de Reial, there was a separate concert, a DJ was mixing live techno-trans music.  Again, a fabulous sound system.  The whole enclosed square and surrounding buildings were vibrating, but not the People. They were standing, drinking huge quantities of beer, and talking politely.  In the Israel, only a few places come to mind that could even remotely compare with this public space in the tradition of the Moslem Khan (caravans inn). One is the Khan in old Acre, but it is not a living public space.  Had a similar concert been staged there, it would have clearly turned out to be the Israeli rave party of the year…

At 5:30am I had a couple of pocadillos at Jessica’s. The place was busier than ever, then dragged myself to bed.  Today is busy, cocktail party in the Data Analytics conference at 6:30pm and then another night of La Merce…  These computer science professors are not so nerdy after all, scheduling meetings in Barcelona on La Merce…

The bottom line: 

Today, only Messi/FCB, Catalonian Independence, and resistance to the banksters can get Catalans excited.  Once they get the latter two issues accomplished, they would get more excited about dancing and music.  In the meanwhile, La Merce could benefit from more visitors from abroad, to liven up the party.

P.S. - Placa de Espana

In Placa de Espana there is a nightly multimedia spectacular around the fountain.  The entire Placa is a fascist monument.  The only conceivable remedy for this public space would be artistic, designed destruction of the pompous colonnades.  The end result would be a pleasing, functional, modern conference center and a collection of high-priced designer shops among the ruins of a Forum Romanum look-alike. It would be even pleasing, and draw more People to the square, which is typically deserted at day and night.   

Readers, adept at Photoshop and with some artistic abilities, are called upon to send in proposed simulations.

12-09-22 A call for help by Lt.Com. Walt Fitzpatrick

     

Barcelona, September 22 - Lt.Com. Walt Fitzpatrick is one of those, who challenged and repudiated the fraud in Obama's long form birth certificate. Consequently, he suffered dire consequences. The latest episode is detailed in the fund-raising letter below.

Regarding the case of Lt.Com. (retired) Walter Fitzpatrick, already a year ago, the ACLU issued a report, detailing his treatment in prison, which was described as torture - "What goes on there is more like gulags of centuries ago.". [1]

Most alarming, today, in the United States Lt Com. Fitzpatrick is not alone, there are too many like him to count... whistle blowers... leakers... dissenting attorneys... occupiers...  Their treatment is unlawful, retaliatory, and intended to throw terror among the People and thereby intimidate and suppress dissent against a patently corrupt, dictatorial government.

Any yet, "mainstream" media outlets in the United States, Europe, and beyond, and the People by and large it pass, while drumming campaigns against government suppression of dissent in Russia, China, Iran, Cuba...

12-09-22 Barcelona – Merce 2012 – Bravissima!

A fiesta, where Covivencia is the official policy, is a public assembly of the highest significance at this time.  Around the Mediterranean there is a good civil tradition of partying.  Tel-Aviv is already on the top three list of global party towns.  Unless some of the fiesta and Convivencia spirit soon appears in the United States, and even more important – in Jersualem, we are doomed for a medieval, global manifestation of the Vengeance of the Fathers.  Today, partying and festivals are the recommended form of Civil Disobedience!  

  

Barcelona, September 22 – the official poster, hanging all over town, is an artistic design, mixing Arabic, Hebrew and Latin letters, and  the official bulletin emphasizes the fiesta as a Mediterranean event.  It is not by coincidence, since Convivencia is an officially expressed policy in Barcelona. 

With it, Barcelona is trying to recapture the spirit that led some of the cities of the Iberian peninsula to their greatness at a time that Cordova was the largest metropolis in the world, and Toledo was an Arabic/Greek/Hebrew/Latin “FairSearch.org”, in contrast with the sectarian “Googles”.

I took my siesta late, and by the time I woke up it was already late evening.  The city, which is normally packed with tourists, is by now super packed with both tourists and locals.  Close to midnight I got to the beautiful public space between the modern edifice of Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art and the thousand year old Romanesque monastery.  A rock concert stage had been built overnight., and the place was packed with thousands of mesmerized young people.  A light cloud of marijuana was hanging all over the place, carried away at times by the sweet mediteranean nightly breeze.  Huge quantities of beer were consumed.  Not a single policeman was to be seen, there was no need either.  Bigote, a local Bruce Springsteen, was singing in English, which sounded like perfect Catalan to me.  He even had some ballads, or maybe it was my wishful thinking under the influence... His dance style was a local variation of Pulcinella.  I asked a 30 year old woman, dancing next to me, whether Bigote had expressed any political leanings, she was emphatic, no.  I insisted, was he in favor of Catalan independence?   She brushed me off, I was mixing business with partying…

Towards 2:00am I was strolling down La Rambla, singing ‘Oh Barcelona, Barcelona’ in eastern mediteranean trills to a young street cleaning lady, who seemed appreciative of it.  The Barcelona cleaning crews were working all night, keeping the city clean, regardless of the fiesta.  There were some medics and a couple of policemen on La Rambla, but they all were all bored stiff, just watching the party scene.

By the time I got to the Placa del Reial, the concert there was over, but the huge  crowd was still hanging out.  Apparently it was a local equivalent of hard rock performance, since there was no marijuana smell, and the square was literally covered with squashed beer cans.

As usual, by the early morning hours I ended up at Jessica´s – el centro de la vida nocturna de Placa Universitat.  Here too, I got into trouble with my big mouth, when I insisted that adding ketchup on top of the empanada de pollo con batata should be prosecuted as a crime.   Jessica had experienced a minor setback, when it turned out that the handsome Sasha, whom she was pursuing, already had a boyfriend.  No problem, she said smiling, there are others…
